Backpacks are a daily essential for students, but if worn or packed incorrectly, they can lead to poor posture, back pain, and long-term spinal stress. In this video, Dr. Joseph Fanning shares valuable insights on how to choose, pack, and wear a backpack safely to protect growing spines.

Key reminders from Dr. Joe:

  • A backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight.

  • Always encourage kids to wear both straps—not slinging the backpack over one shoulder.

  • The bottom of the backpack should rest at or slightly above the waist to avoid straining the lower back.

  • Choose a bag with padded straps and a supportive back panel to reduce pressure.

A few small adjustments can make a big difference in preventing discomfort and promoting proper spinal alignment. For more guidance on backpack safety or spinal health, reach out to our team at Johns Creek Chiropractic and Wellness Center!
